The MCSE is the benchmark certification for IT professionals in a networking environment. The MCSE certification shows you have proven expertise in a typically complex computing environment within medium to large organisations. Studying for the MCSE.
You gain MCSE certification once you have passed 7 MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) exams. If you are familiar with the Microsoft Windows platform and use operating systems, servers and networks on a daily basis you should expect to take between 3-6 months to complete the MCSE.
For those that are new to the IT industry or are looking change or start a new career you should allow slightly longer study time. There is a lot to learn and it covers many subjects and as with all other professions there is no quick fix to becoming qualified, beginners should allow up to one year to complete the MCSE.

MCSE 2003 Tracks
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) candidates on the Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 track are required to satisfy the following requirements:
Core Exams (6 Exams Required)
- Four networking system exams

Elective Exams (1 Exam Required)
Together with the core exams, the elective exams provide a valid and reliable measure of technical proficiency and expertise in solution design and implementation. MCSE candidates should also have at least one year of experience implementing and administering network operating systems and desktop operating systems.
MCSE 2000 Track
MCSE 2000 candidates are required to pass seven exams to achieve certification. There are five core exams comprised of four operating system exams and one design exam. The remaining two exams are taken from the elective list. The exams are:
